Q: Why does the suicide rate go up around the holidays?
A: I read an article about this a while back. Suicide is a big topic with me. From what I remember, the CDC did not indicate an increase in suicides in the holiday months. In fact, they said it wen down. The reason why we see so much of an apparent increase in suicides is all about media coverage. Like EVERYTHING else, they sensationalize the story.
On a personal note, I know of one suicide by a family friend many years ago just a few days before Christmas (maybe today, I think) due to his wife's infidelities. Very sad. It tore everyone up. Suicide is one of the worst things a group of people can live through. If you or someone you know may be thinking of taking their own life, talk to them. Suicide is a very permanent solution to a usually temporary problem. There is usually always another solution and there is ALWAYS someone to talk to.

What if it's not a temporary problem and talking about only gets blank stares?
ReplyDeleteAs I said, "usually". It's still something that needs to be discussed openly and honestly with those closest to you. Our mortality is very real and should not be considered without the utmost thought for not only ourselves, but also for those affected by our lives. This is another reason why having a will is incredibly important.
ReplyDeleteI certainly hope it's not something you are considering, but I also know everyone's situation is just as unique as it is difficult.
